I used to wear makeup because I loved the way it looked. I mean, I wore it because it was fun and I felt confident and it was a little bit of peace in my morning routine, but mostly, I just enjoyed looking good for the people around me. I thought I had too much acne or my hair was too thin to “pull off” the styles I saw people try on Instagram and Pinterest. Now, I put makeup on because it makes me feel cool and powerful in meetings, it’s something fun to kickstart my day, and it’s quite the conversation starter. This has led me to try new makeup looks I never would have previously even looked at, let alone covered my face in. But now I look forward to new trends every single season. This year’s summer makeup trends are here, so I naturally jumped at the chance to try them.

Cute Workout Clothes You Can Wear 24/7 This Summer

leggings for life 😍

The trends this summer are everything I’ve ever wanted and more. From bright lips to glittery eyeshadow to lightweight skin and simple, gorgeous hair looks to boot, Hot Girl Summer lives on once again. I was so excited, I had to try them for myself. Here’s how it went:

1. Orange Lips

A post shared by Hung Vanngo (@hungvanngo)

I gave up wearing bright lips for the last year thanks to wearing a mask, and while I’m not putting my mask away anytime soon, I’m feeling seriously in the mood for bright, summery lips again. This gorgeous look on Julia Garner by Hung Vanngo (Selena Gomez’s makeup artist, NBD) inspired me to get out my orange lipstick once again. Orange is a favorite shade of mine, and just like red, there’s an option for everyone depending on your undertone. I like a yellow-based orange on my olive/warm-tone skin, but a pinky-coral orange is perfect if you like something cooler. I did my base as normal, used a gold shimmery eyeshadow across my lids, and carefully applied my favorite orange lipstick.

This was perfect to wear for a day of meetings because I felt put-together and ready to take on my day all thanks to a few swipes of lipstick.  I could see myself wearing a similar look often, especially because it was beyond simple but wildly effective at making me look great.

2. ‘90s Volume

My fine, thin, medium-length hair didn’t quite go as well as I thought with this trend. I started off by blow-drying my hair with my Revlon Styler which is usually what I use when I want to inject lots of volume into my hair. I also used three velcro rollers to get some more volume on the sides of my face and the crown. Then, I curled just the ends of my hair with a 1 in. curling iron, alternating directions to keep the curls from all blending together. At first, it looked super cute—it was fluffy, bouncy, and had all the flair we see in queen Meg’s above. But in less than 45 minutes, the curls fell completely flat and were entirely nonexistent. The volume lasted a bit longer, but my hair was straight merely an hour after I tried the look.

Because I loved how it looked so much, I’m considering investing in hot rollers or a small heated curling brush (and maybe one day I’ll hit the lottery and invest in a Dyson Airwrap, which is what they used to achieve this look on Megan Thee Stallion!) to try it again.

3. Disco Eyes

The disco trend is all about fun, colorful, metallic, glittery goodness. It’s the antithesis to the last year and a celebration of what’s to come. So, you won’t be surprised to know it was the trend I was most excited to try. Of course, I waited until a Wednesday full of meetings to try it, so you’re welcome to everyone who got to see me with glitter all over my face in a business meeting. 🙂

There are dozens of ways to try this out, but I opted for a metallic silver eyelid with glitter in the inner corner and lining the outer lash line. For a disco look, this was pretty easy. Practical? Not so much, but that’s to be expected with this trend. I can see myself wearing this whenever I just want to have fun and enjoy the process of getting ready—and of course, when I finally hit the bars again.

4. No Makeup

A post shared by Sofia Grahn (@isofiagrahn)

Skinmalism is a trend in you’re likely seeing it everywhere, but I believe it’s about to be the future of the makeup and skincare industry. Brands like Topicals are making it known that skincare conditions like acne and rosacea aren’t inherently “flaws”; they’re just parts of our skin, and you can choose to or choose not to cover them up.

Like many, I’m not particularly confident with my bare skin thanks to acne, scarring, and clogged pores. But the only way I’m going to start feeling better with it is by trying new things like this. So, I did my makeup as normal and skipped my usual foundation and concealer step. I added a little concealer underneath my eyes to make my eyeshadow pop, but otherwise, I kept my complexion products to a little bronzer and highlighter. Because I didn’t cover up my face with foundation, I already had a bit of natural color, so I didn’t even need blush (but if I wanted to amp it up, I definitely could have still added some!).

Am I obsessed with this look right now? No. I didn’t magically learn to love, or even accept, my skin overnight. But I can say that doing it more and more over time will help me, and I appreciate how good my skin felt all day. I love eyeshadow and makeup products, so I’ve never been someone who can go makeup-free all the time, but with this look, I love that I can get the benefits of letting my skin breathe without sacrificing another day of surprising my coworkers on Zoom with colorful eyeshadow.

5.  Colorful Liner

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by HABIT (@habitskin)

This trend has been floating around the last few summers, but we’re seeing it taken to the next level for 2021. Floating lines, double wings, contrasting colors, ombre—you name it. This trend is everything I want in a beauty look: colorful, unique, edgy, and totally cool. But is it easy? Not exactly. I’m admittedly not great at winged liner, and this seriously tested my skills. There isn’t much room for error in this since it’s such a bright color, and unlike my black liner looks, I can’t smudge it and chalk it up to a ~smokey eye~. I had to make sure my lines were straight and even, which took me an absurd amount of time.

But the result put me on cloud nine all day. Since this was an eye look, I could wear it to the grocery store or on a Target run and completely show it off even while wearing my mask. And boy did I want to show this one off. I probably won’t do this look all the time, but I already have it slated for patio season big time.

15 Realistic Fitness Goals To Set This Year

You know how it goes: we all start out the year with aspirations to get fit, get healthy, and be our best selves. But when those fitness goals are based on long-term ideas of how we want to look (“lose 10 pounds,” “go down a pants size,” “get abs,”) rather than short-term goals on how we want to feel, those goals fall through in a matter of months or even weeks, and you feel let down, disappointed, and like a failure.

leggings for life 😍

Instead of the endless cycle of weight-focused fitness goals, and make goals based on what’s actually good for you, and goals that you’ll actually be able to stick to. When you focus on what your body can do, rather than how your body looks, you’ll start to appreciate it so much more, and want to give it more of what it needs to be its healthiest. Replace your fitness goals that are focused on the way you look or the way your pants fit with these 14 goals that will make you *actually* stronger, healthier, and better:

1. Try one new workout every month

Having a fitness routine is important, but always having the same fitness routine? Not great. For one reason, your body gets used to the same movements, miles, or weights, and in order to keep getting stronger, you should always be challenging yourself. More importantly, if you stick to the same exact workout routine every day, you’ll get bored. Being bored will make you less likely to want to work out, and the key to consistent exercise is not willpower, it’s enjoyment. News flash: exercise should be fun.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Look for new opportunities to work out. Check out the classes your gym offers, say yes if your work friend invites you along on her run after work, or if you see a $10 first-class deal at a yoga studio, do it.

  • Go for the opposite workout than what you’re used to. If you’re a gym rat who prefers weight training, try a dance class, or if you’re a diehard yogi, try an HIIT workout. Changing up the routine will not only help your body get stronger, but will help you enjoy the process, too.

  • Not sure where to begin when trying something new? Make online workouts your BFF. Search a workout you’ve never tried before on Youtube video (Beyoncé cardio workout? Yes please!), look up your favorite trainers’ Instagram pages and search their IGTVs or Reels for shorter workouts, or opt for an online fitness platform with a variety of options (if you haven’t heard, we’re partial to Obé Fitness).

2. Stretch more

Stretching is one of the #1 things we can do to help strengthen our muscles, avoid injuries, and even relieve tension (both physically and mentally!), but most of us aren’t stretching enough. Especially combined with a sedentary lifestyle and intense workouts, not stretching enough can cause injuries and muscle strain. Not only is a warm-up and post-exercise stretch crucial for those muscles you’re working, but stretching throughout the day can improve the overall health of your body.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Never work out without some form of a dynamic warmup before and stretching the worked muscles afterward. Danyele Wilson, a NASM certified trainer, HIIT master trainer, Tone & Sculpt coach recommended at least five minutes of active stretching to warm up the body. Post-workout, focus on isolated stretches: stretch and hold for 20-30 seconds to target the muscle groups that you used during your workout.

  • Make stretching a part of your routine. Take a few minutes in the morning to do a few morning stretches to wake you up, and a few minutes at night to help you wind down. Also, turn specific breaks throughout your day into “stretch breaks,” whether that’s doing a few yoga poses once every hour during the workday or stretching tight muscles during commercial breaks when Real Housewives is on.

  • Get specific and make stretching work for your body. Try these stretches if you need a good night’s sleep, these stretches if you are feeling anxious, or these stretches to improve digestion.

3. Perfect your form

You could be working out every day or doing hundreds of reps, but if you don’t have the right form, you might not be strengthening as much as you think (or worse: you could actually be causing injuries and longterm damage). Proper form helps you maximize a workout by using your energy for the extra push, meaning that no movement goes to waste. If you have improper form, you might be targeting unintended muscles and setting yourself up for injury. Plus, good form means you can run faster, jump higher, and push harder (yes, you will feel like Superman). Knowing exactly how to perfect your form (no matter what type of workout it is) is crucial for properly protecting your body, strengthening your muscles, and keeping your body healthy.

How to Accomplish It:

  • If you have the option, utilize a free personal training session at your gym to have a trainer give you one-on-one attention for perfecting your form, or look up the proper form of your most common movements on Youtube (like squats) to learn the best way to perform the move. It might feel tedious, but the education and practice will be worth it in the long run.

  • If you’re a fan of fitness classes, utilize the instructor. Don’t be afraid to call over the instructor if it’s a class like barre or pilates where the instructors are there to help you to check in about your form, or hang back after class to discuss the movements you’re not sure about and if any movement feels painful in a negative way.

  • Don’t go up in weight or reps until you know that your form won’t be compromised, and focus on form even more so when your body is feeling tired (AKA when we typically begin to forget about form).

4. Get a workout buddy

Do you have a friend, significant other, roommate, or work wife who also wants to stick to their resolutions? Make them your accountability buddy and motivate each other by exchanging healthy recipes, sending motivational quotes, and checking in to see how the other is feeling or keeping up with their goal. You don’t have to have the same resolutions to motivate each other, but it certainly helps if you plan to hop on a Zoom yoga class with a friend or set up weekly meetings with your work wife to see how your career resolutions are coming along. You’ll be much more motivated feeling like you’re in this together.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Team up with a coworker to work out before the workday starts (meet for an early morning run or text each other to make sure you’re up for individual online workout classes), make friends with people at your gym, or simply tell a friend you trust your fitness goals and ask for help staying accountable.

  • Instead of your usual coffee date or happy hour drinks to catch up with friends, suggest a barre class or going for a walk.

5. Do something active every week that makes you feel calm

Fitness should not be all about working as hard as you can, as much as you can. You have to be just as serious about your rest days as you are about your workout days and focus on the mental benefits of fitness just as much as the physical. Instead of sticking to intense, heart-pumping, sweat-dripping workouts, add in an activity every week that makes you feel calm. Now that’s a fitness goal that you can stick to (and will make a major difference in your wellbeing).

How to Accomplish It:

  • Instead of a fifth day at the gym or the same HIIT class you do every day, opt for a calming yoga class at the end of the week, or do your own flow at home (bonus: focus on Savasana more than you focus on the tricep push-ups).

  • If it’s nice outside or you need some fresh air, don’t force yourself into a gym or on the yoga mat in your living room: take a walk instead. Listen to a podcast, put on your comfy shoes, and take some time for yourself while you’re moving your body.

  • Incorporate meditation. It’ll quiet your mind while your body rests, too. I love meditating right after working out (it feels extra good when your body is tired), but if you need some additional help, check out meditation apps or another kind of meditation.

6. Walk instead of drive whenever you can

You might’ve heard that a healthy person gets 10,000 steps a day (curse you, Fitbit!). While I’m not personally a fan of defining our health based on numbers (our wellbeing is much more subjective than that), walking is undeniably good for our health. The body is meant to be consistently active throughout the day, but most of us are sitting basically 24/7 (at your desk, in the car, or on the couch for a Netflix binge).

How to Accomplish It:

  • Closeout the Uber app or put away the car keys and make the most of the warmer weather by walking. Make sure you plan ahead to allow for a longer commute time, wear comfortable shoes (no more blisters, please!), and cue up a good podcast or playlist to make the time go quickly.

  • If you’re going somewhere too far to walk, get off the train a couple of stops early, park in a farther garage, or have your Uber drop you off a few blocks away.

  • Make easy swaps in your routine to up your step count. For example: use the furthest bathroom instead of the closest, treat yourself to a latte at a walkable coffee stop instead of making your own, or go to the grocery store more often (because walking down food aisles count too!).

7. Remind yourself of your “why” every day

New Year’s resolutions often fail (or are forgotten by February) because we forget the “why.”  The first step to holding yourself accountable is to put meaning behind the goals you set. For example, “going to the gym every day” is a fine goal, but you need to look at the bigger picture goal as well. Why do you want to go to the gym every day? Is it to be stronger, feel more confident, or live longer? If you’re not looking at the reason, the goal will never feel motivating enough to actually achieve.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Instead of thinking you’re supposed to go on a run, attend a workout class, or get up early for exercise before work, remind yourself why you want to do something. Tell yourself you want to work out before work because it makes you feel better during the day, or you want to lift some weights because feeling stronger helps you feel more confident.

  • Take some time to reflect or journal about why accomplishing this goal is important to you and how it will make a difference in your life.

  • Tape affirmations or your “why” reason somewhere you’d see it every day like on your fridge, mirror, or laptop.

8. Drink more water

Staying hydrated is a tale as old as time, but there’s a reason just about every expert on the planet recommends it. Your body uses water to maintain the functions of cells, organs, tissues, etc. No surprise that water is not only an overall health goal, but also crucial for you to achieve your strongest, fittest self. As with everything else, the amount of water the body needs for optimal health varies from person to person because of factors like lifestyle, activity level, and bio-individuality, but it’s a good rule of thumb to be drinking half of your body weight in ounces a day, or just as much as possible.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Find the type of water bottle you like the best and buy multiple. This sounds so simple, and yet it’s the easiest way to trick yourself into drinking more. Do you prefer tumblers with straws, glass bottles, or steel canisters? Figure it out!

  • Set smaller daily goals for yourself that are easy to follow, like “drink three water bottles full of water before lunch” or “after dinner, I’m going to drink two cups before going to bed.”

  • Add fresh ingredients to your water like lemons, mint, cucumbers, ginger, or fruit. Not only will it boost the nutrients, but it will boost the taste too (and feel bougie AF!).

  • Drink a glass of water every single morning before you have a cup of coffee or a bite of food.

9. Get 7-9 hours of sleep

Say it with me now: Sleep. Is. Crucial. For. Your. Fitness. Sleep gives your body time to recover and rebuild muscles, as well as conserve enough energy for you to exert at your next workout. Getting your beauty rest is critical for both your body’s health and the success of your workouts, so tracking how many hours of sleep you’re really getting can help determine if your sleep is restoring or if you could use a little improvement. Aim for 8-9 hours (sounds good, right?), but get no less than seven.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Go to bed just five minutes earlier every night. You won’t even notice the difference but in just a couple of weeks (or less), you’ll be sleeping one hour more than you used to.

  • Try an app like SleepCycle that will not only track how many hours you’re sleeping, but will also identify sleep quality; even if you’re getting nine hours but your sleep cycles are poor quality, you won’t feel well-rested.

  • Perfect a nighttime routine that helps you wind you down. Read for 15 minutes, do a meditation, or have a multi-step skincare routine. You’re less likely to break a routine you enjoy the next time you’re tempted to binge Grey’s Anatomy until late at night.

10. Live less sedentary

Forget designated workout times or using a “rest day” as an excuse to not get off of the couch all day. The most important “fitness goal” you could make for yourself is not a longer or more intense workout, but just to live less sedentary overall. That means more non-workout movement and prioritizing your body outside of gym sessions or workout classes. Movement throughout your entire day can help boost consistent energy and help everything from posture to chronic pain.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Walk to work or your evening plans instead of drive, or take a walk around the block on your lunch break (see point #6).

  • Turn on music and dance whenever you’re cooking or getting ready (bonus: it makes mundane activities way more fun!)

  • Set reminders to get up every hour on the hour throughout your workday for some movement: stretch, do 10 squats, or go through a quick yoga flow.

11. Schedule workouts in your calendar

When appointments, meetings, or tasks are on your calendar, you know they’re going to get done. And you’ll probably show up on time, be fully prepared, and never skip. Just because a workout is not a work meeting does not mean you shouldn’t prioritize it as such. Honor your fitness goals like you would any other appointment on your schedule. For example, either sign up for an online workout class in advance or put “going on a jog” in your calendar.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Schedule workouts in your calendar at the beginning of each week instead of planning to get to a workout “sometime.”

  • Sign up for workout classes (either virtual or in-person) in advance. The cancellation fee itself will be enough to ensure you show up, and the strict start time will make sure you’re not late or push it off.

  • Honor the workout as you would a business meeting (since both belong in your calendar!). Show up on time, plan ahead, and be prepared.

12. Always take the stairs if you can

About that sneaking in more movement into our daily lives instead of just intensifying workouts, every set of stairs is an opportunity for a mini glute workout (no, really!). While escalators and elevators are functional, convenient, and important, they also might be one of those sneaky reasons our step goals seem impossible to reach. If you are able to, take the stairs whenever possible to engage muscles, increase step count, and get your heart rate up (and if you have a walk-up apartment, enjoy it instead of cursing it).

How to Accomplish It:

  • This one’s pretty simple: opt for the stairs over an escalator or elevator whenever possible.

13. Aim for balance

Working out way too hard and way too constantly without proper time to rest and recuperate could lead to burnout, injuries, and overall exhaustion. Instead of making goals based on how “intense” you can go or how long you want to work out, aim for balance. After all, the goal of health is balance, not perfection. Prioritizing rest as much as you prioritize exercise will help you be as healthy as possible, both physically and mentally. Bottom line: listen to your body more often than you listen to your workout plan or fitness routine.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Do something every single day that you count as “self-care,” whether it’s getting to bed early, reading for 30 minutes, or watching Real Housewives reruns (we won’t judge).

  • Make sure you’re enjoying your health routine. If you’re feeling bored with your workouts, switch it up. If you feel exhausted, take a break and try yoga. Cook inventive and interesting food instead of just bland protein and veggies for every meal, and master healthy cooking.

  • Listen to your body: become a master at knowing if you’re feeling lethargic and need to exercise to get your energy up, or if you’ve been running yourself too thin and you need a day to rest.

14. Give yourself a compliment or gratitude every day.

By now I don’t need to tell you the importance of self-love and body positivity when it comes to achieving your goals. The more you believe in yourself and love yourself, the more likely you are to achieve your goals—because you’ll be achieving them for the right reasons. Putting yourself down or feeling like you’re not reaching goals fast enough will make you already failed instead of motivating you to work harder. The secret to achieving any goal is to realize you already have what it takes to be your best right now. In fact, the only thing keeping you from being the strongest, healthiest version of yourself is your own belief that you’re not already there.

How to Accomplish It:

  • Start a gratitude journal. Write what you’re grateful for about your body: how your thighs are so strong, how you can run so fast, or even just that you’re healthy and alive.

  • Stare in the mirror and give yourself a compliment. Look for the good in yourself, and tell yourself you’re beautiful for a million other reasons besides the way you look. Eventually, you’ll start to believe it.

  • After every workout, make it a habit to silently say “thank you” to your body for working so hard and getting you through the workout.

The Best Leggings, According to Our Editors

I have exactly two motivators to work out. The first: the instant mood boost I feel afterward. And second: a really good pair of leggings. Sometimes all it takes to get me out of a workout slump or a lazy mood is to throw on my favorite pair of leggings that make me feel confident, comfortable, and ready to take on the world. Whether you prefer cropped, ankle-length, or printed, there’s no denying that a good pair of leggings is more than just dressing to impress; the right pair can help you be more active and feel more confident (you know the pair because you’ll be more inclined to check out your derrière in the mirror). However, finding that right pair is almost as difficult as finding a pair of jeans that fit like a glove, so we did all the work for you. Shop on for every pair of leggings our editors swear by (and we’ve tried a lot) to find the fit, style, fabric, and price point that’s perfect for you. Your downward dog has never looked better!

Is it just my Instagram feed, or are quilted sandals blowing up RN? Every blogger, influencer, and style star I follow is only wearing sandals that are either braided or quilted, and my inner fashion-girl-wannabe cannot complain. The sandals of this season are not the strappy or gladiator alternatives of summers past; they’re way more luxurious, detailed, timeless, and comfortable (thank god!). Turns out texture is everything this year, and faux leather really can work for warmer weather. Wear the it-sandal trend of the season dressed up with a sundress or dressed down with denim cut-offs; either way, you’ll look oh-so-chic. See you on my Instagram feed!

My First Time Getting A Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Full disclosure: I am a sucker for any wellness, beauty, and health trend I find on Instagram. From CBD to celery juice to B12 shots, I’ve tried it all (and if I haven’t yet, I probably plan to). There have been ones that have now been incorporated into my approaches to beauty and wellness. There have also been ones that I could definitely live without. Over the past few months, I have noticed the increase in influencers, bloggers, and models getting lymphatic drainage massages to detoxify their bodies. Honestly, I was skeptical at first that a massage could do all that it claimed to help with. After contemplating it for a while and doing my research, I finally decided to give it a try.

I made an appointment at a local massage and healing center near me. I made sure that the masseuse was proficient in lymphatic drainage massages. Before the massage, I discussed some of the issues I was having with her and she explained how this treatment would help. The biggest reason I went in was that I suffer from chronic back pain from a prior sports injury that flares up a few times a year, making it hard to stand and walk. She went over what to expect and we talked about the method she uses. The initial process of the massage is just like any other massage: you get undressed and lay on a heated table. After that, don’t expect a deep tissue massage, because it’s nothing like that! She used light, repetitive strokes focusing on my arms, armpits, stomach, back, and legs. When the massage was over, I rested and drank a lot of water as I was directed to.

A couple of days after the massage, I felt like I had an extra pep in my step. I was able to work out with no pain and my body felt like it was given a boost of energy. I noticed that the water weight around my midsection had gone down and I was no longer bloated. Overall, the inflammation in my body was gone, and I felt like my body was finally in a comfortable, content state that moved with ease. I’m not saying this massage was the answer to all my problems, but I will definitely be adding it to my health routine a few times a year! Keep reading to learn more about what a lymphatic drainage massage is and if it could benefit you.

What does the lymphatic system do?

The lymphatic system consists of lymph vessels, ducts, nodes, and other tissues, and is located underneath the skin. Think of its function kind of like the garbage disposal of the body (gross analogy, I know): it gets rid of “waste” in the body, whether it’s toxins, bacteria, or excess fluid. The lymph is a collection of the extra fluid that moves through the arteries and tissues to clean them out, before draining them through the lymphatic system.

However, there is no pump to push the lymph through the body, and it relies on our muscle action to maintain fluid movement. Therefore, any kind of manual “drainage” (I know, so much imagery about that garbage disposal) is said to work by moving the lymph to the lymph nodes to eliminate the toxins and bacteria. While there is some controversy around the massage style, this system is crucial to the body’s health, and stimulating it through methodical massage could have many benefits.

What is a lymphatic drainage massage?

A lot more people are incorporating this massage into their health and wellness routines. You can find directions online on how to give yourself this massage, but I recommend going to a licensed therapist who is trained in lymphatic drainage massage for a proper treatment.

A lymphatic drainage massage uses very light pressure and long, rhythmic strokes that get the lymph fluid moving and directs the toxins into the organs that can properly remove them. A trained practitioner’s hands can simply apply pressure to re-stimulate the natural contractions of the lymphatic system. This will move the stagnant fluid back into the natural lymph flow of the body.

What are the benefits?

The relaxing practice is often used to treat acne, cellulite, digestive issues, puffiness, stress, inflammation, insomnia, migraines, and certain health complications, but that’s not all. A lymphatic drainage massage is also commonly used for its ability to:

  • Fight off infection
  • Speed up healing and recovery from the cold and flu
  • Reduce water retention
  • Boost weight loss
  • Improve cellulite, skin swelling, scar tissue, acne, and stretch marks
  • Reduce stress and fatigue
  • Help with post-exercise recovery

When should I do it?

Everyone can benefit from getting a lymphatic drainage massage with the change of the seasons. This is because with each season we are eating different foods, our level of activity is changing, and the change in weather can affect the body’s internal processes. When you’re ever feeling extra bloated would be a great time to receive the treatment, as it helps to reduce water retention. But bottom line, every body is different, so if you suffer from any of the listed symptoms and feel like a lymphatic drainage massage would help, I suggest meeting with a trained professional to discuss a schedule that would be good for your body. You can also DIY in the comfort of your own home using a dry brush, tool, or just your hands as a relaxing ritual before bed or a practice to keep you calm and energized throughout the day.

Other tips

  • Drink plenty of water before and after your massage, as it can cause you to become dehydrated
  • It’ll leave you feeling pretty exhausted, so you’ll want to take it easy for the rest of the day
  • I suggest stripping down to as little clothing as possible (that you feel comfortable with) so the masseuse can do the treatment most effectively

Are the Redken Acidic Bonding Products Better Than Olaplex?

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Over the past year or so, I’d be embarrassed to know how much money I’ve spent on products I’ve seen on TikTok. Say what you will about the platform as a whole, but it holds a power to convince people to buy products perhaps like nothing else before—and once their algorithm figured out I’m a sucker for hearing about products for bleached hair, all bets were completely off.

leggings for life 😍

A couple of months ago, the platform was buzzing about a new shampoo and conditioner that were a surefire Olaplex alternative. After seeing dozens of videos talking about them, it piqued my interest enough to do some digging.

As an Olaplex lover but also as someone who loves to try new, innovative products, the Redken Acidic Bonding shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatment sounded right up my alley, promising repair to broken bonds that are a result of damaged hair. After six weeks of consistent use, I have a lot of thoughts—and might even have a replacement for my long-time haircare favorites. Here’s how it went:

About My Hair

I have never been someone whose hair is anything near amazing—and it’s only gotten worse over the past decade of consistently highlighting it. It’s pin-straight, medium-thickness, and without effort, is pretty lifeless.

My hair is very, very, very straight, and because of that, I don’t deal with too much frizz, but I do deal with feeling like my strands look lackluster overall. I’ve had hair stylists tell me for how often I dye it that my hair is in great shape, but obviously, with consistent bleaching comes dryness and breakage, two things I deal with consistently.

I’m someone who has always thrown all of my efforts into my skincare, but when it comes to hair care, I could do more. I’ve been on a journey of trying to get it into great shape, and that has included a lot of Olaplex—which I think has helped my situation quite a bit, but not in a way that makes me never want to use anything else.

About the Products

The Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate System claims to repair all types of damaged hair with the help of citric acid, which reinforces weakened bonds and improves hair strength. All three of the products are pH-balanced, specifically formulated to defend against the negative effects of hair coloring, heat styling, and even water, which has a pH of 7. The products aim to bring hair’s pH back to a healthy range of 4.5-5.5, which results in healthier hair. It also contains color fade protection and is sulfate-free.

The scent: 10/10

The products are formulated with citric acid, which leaves it with an absolutely lovely, light citrus scent. I’m pretty sensitive to smells in my products, and this is one of my favorites I’ve come across in that it smells great but isn’t too overpowering in any way.

The packaging: 9/10

I find this packaging to be super sleek and easy to use. The white bottles with silver, metallic labels are beautiful in my shower caddy and made me want to display them front and center. Of all of Redken’s packaging (which I have a decent amount of), this is by far my favorite.

The price: 4/10

Unfortunately, the one caveat of this product is that it’s pretty pricey; at about $30 per product, it’s similarly priced to Olaplex itself. However, since it’s a product concentrate, I found that I use significantly less of it than other shampoos and conditioners, and after six weeks, I’ve hardly made a dent in either product—and I generally go through shampoos and conditioners pretty quickly. I’d say going through this will take me double the amount of time it took me to go through Olaplex shampoo and conditioners, which makes the price feel a lot more reasonable. The bottles are also a little bigger, coming in at 10.1 fl. oz. versus Olaplex’s 8.5 fl. oz. packaging, so it clocks in cheaper per ounce too.

The shampoo: 9/10

Off the bat, I noticed that this shampoo lathers quite a bit less than others, but after getting used to it, I really enjoyed how it felt on my hair. I wash my hair around three times a week (which I wish was a lower number, but with a lot of sweaty workouts, it makes it hard to go further between washes).

I can more or less tell if I like a shampoo as I’m rinsing it out in the shower. A lot of shampoos will make my hair feel immediately dry and brittle, but as I rinsed this one out, it felt sleek and soft. The experience of using it is lovely because of the aforementioned citrus scent, and I feel that it really cleans my hair without leaving it dry whatsoever, which almost never happens for me. I also appreciate that I don’t need to worry about fading my color with it, as many shampoos result in my blonde fading and turning brassy.

I generally use purple shampoo every third wash to keep my hair’s tone in check, but since using this, I’ve noticed I feel like my purple shampoo days are fewer and further between—about once every five washes rather than the usual three. This is absolutely huge for me, as it really shows that this isn’t damaging my hair’s color and it’s preventing even further damage since purple shampoo is notoriously drying and damaging.

The conditioner: 8/10

Of the three products, this one surprised me the most. I usually put a ridiculous, unnecessary amount of conditioner in my hair, but again, since this is a concentrate, I used far less than I normally do but noticed better results.

I’ll say that I didn’t notice a huge difference in my hair softness after a single wash, but over time, this has made my hair look and feel significantly healthier. It’s easy for my hair to feel weighed-down, which makes finding conditioners I really love difficult since I also want them to be as hydrating as possible, but this strikes the balance between both perfectly.

Redken

The leave-in treatment: 9/10

A leave-in product can absolutely make or break my entire haircare routine. I need to finish my hair routine with hydrating leave-in products, but more often than not, they weigh my straight hair down and leave it with absolutely no volume or body. I can tell whether or not I love one immediately after drying my hair, and knew off the bat that this was a winner.

This product is my absolute dream leave-in product: it tames any frizz and makes my hair look sleek and healthy, without leaving it greasy or heavy. I put a pretty small amount from the middle of my hair through the ends, and it feels like a drink of water for my dry strands.

Before

After six weeks

Again, my hair has been colored between these pictures, but I think that speaks even more to the results I’ve been getting, as my hair is usually dry as a bone after getting dyed. My hair looks thicker, shinier, and healthier overall, and has a lot more luster than it did before I started.

The final verdict:

After six weeks of using these, I’ve noticed a significant difference in my hair’s health. I feel as if they’re really repairing my hair and giving it what it needs, rather than just putting a bandaid on dryness and breakage with oils or waxes.

I got my hair colored in the middle of trying these products, which also was a huge test since my hair is usually quite dry immediately after. After my first wash post-color, I didn’t feel nearly as dry as I normally did and noticed the difference right away, since it’s something I normally dread as an after-effect of my hair appointments.

Compared with Olaplex’s shampoo and conditioner, I felt very similar results, but since I use less of this product than I do Olaplex, I would repurchase these products instead, and know that I 100 percent will once I run out.

11 Questions All First-Time Investors Have

Consider this your ultimate guide to finally feeling like you have the know-how to be an investor.

Source: Social Squares

It’s an age-old joke—one that makes its rounds on memes on the internet constantly—but its sentiment always rings true: in school, we learned all about the quadratic formula, but never how to write a check or file our taxes.

leggings for life 😍

For those of us who didn’t study anything business or finance-related in college, that theme pretty much can sum up the entirety of much of our financial knowledge. It’s easy to feel like we’re so far behind in the financial world that we don’t even know what we don’t know—especially when it comes to investing.

But here’s the thing: it’s not too late, and while being a first-time investor can be daunting, it doesn’t need to be scary. The key to a non-intimidating investing experience is a non-intimidating, inclusive platform to actually do the investing on, and that’s why as a first-time investor myself, I’ve turned to Public.com. Public combines investing with social media for an investing experience that’s informative, accessible, and completely understandable, even to beginners.

We’ve turned to the experienced investors at Public to answer all of the most commonly-asked questions our audience of first-time investors had, from when the best time to start investing is to how you even go about beginning the process. Consider this your ultimate guide to finally feeling like you have the know-how to be an investor.

The following is for educational purposes only and is not investment advice.*

1. Why should I start investing?

Investing your money means that you are putting aside money now with the expectation that it will grow over time. Say you put $100 away each month in a shoebox under your bed. Over time, that money will lose value due to inflation. (Inflation just means that the value of the dollar is decreasing over time; a latte at Starbucks costs $5 today but may be $7 in a few years.)

When you invest your money, the goal is to put it into something now because you think the value of the asset will appreciate over time. This could apply to a real estate property, an index fund (collection of stocks), shares of stock in a single company, or even a collectible or piece of art.

Investing is a powerful tool for wealth creation because of compounding. An asset that appreciates 10 percent a year over many years has a snowballing effect because the interest applied becomes larger and larger as your investment grows. Type some amounts into a Compound Interest Calculator to see for yourself.

2. Should I pay off my debt before investing?

Personal finance, as the name would suggest, is personal, and your specific approach will be specific to your own financial situation, goals, and risk tolerance. Sadly, there isn’t a one size fits all answer to this question. Many experts suggest looking at the specifics of the debt you owe, specifically the interest rates, to decide how you may want to balance debt repayments with investing goals.

When deciding if you want to pay off your debt or invest first, it’s important to look at how high the interest rate of your debt is. For example, if you have a loan with 5 percent interest, but could invest somewhere that would give that money a 7 percent rate of return, it would make more sense to invest while paying off your debt. You should also keep an extra eye on your credit interest, as the amount you owe can add up quicker than you might think, leaving you in a worse financial situation than when you started.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can start small when investing thanks to fractional shares. Fractional shares allow you to gain experience in the market and learn about investing by owning small “slices” of stock. For example, if one share of Amazon is currently $3,000+/share, you can still purchase a portion of a share of Amazon stock for $5 or $10. You can get thousands of stocks and ETFs fractionally on Public, with no commission fees on standard trades.

Balancing debt repayment and investing is possible, and the combination can be a smart move for your money if you go about it in the smartest way for your situation.

3. I know very little about investing. Where do I begin to learn and how can I feel confident in this space?

A Public survey found that 55 percent of investors are self-taught. This is not surprising, since the fundamentals aren’t something that’s usually taught in school. Only 52 percent of U.S. households have any positions in the stock market, according to data from Pew Research, so many people don’t grow up in an environment where investing is the norm.

The good news is that there is an abundance of materials out there for educating yourself on the basics. You don’t have to get into the depths of investing subreddits or sit in front of the CNN stock ticker with a notebook and pencil to get the information you need. One book that covers a lot of the basics is “The Bogleheads Guide to Investing,” but there are hundreds more. You might also subscribe to newsletters like Morning Brew, or find creators who share educational content on these topics, like Mrs. Dow Jones, all of which approach investing in a conversational, understandable way.

Beyond empowering yourself with basic knowledge, communities like Public can help take your financial literacy to the next level because they allow you to learn through hands-on experience. It’s similar to studying a language in school, and then visiting a place where that language is spoken.

Participating in a community of investors can help you navigate in ways that are accessible and in the context of your actual investments. Not only can you interact with real people talking about how they’re investing their money, but you can tune into Public’s investing suggestions based on themes. For example, when quarantine began in full swing, they suggested investments under a “Stay at Home” theme, which included companies thriving in the new world quarantine, like Peloton and Blue Apron. Both of these combined make it easier to make informed investing decisions without needing to tune into investing cable news or jargon-filled articles.

Source: Social Squares

4. How is investing in a 401(k) different than investing with a brokerage account? What are the benefits of each?

401(k)s are retirement investments that are designed to help you grow a nest egg for when you enter retirement age. These accounts are tax-advantaged, meaning you can put pre-tax money into them with the expectation that you will pay taxes on the funds when you start using them later in life. A Roth IRA is an individual retirement account (IRA) that allows qualified withdrawals on a tax-free basis provided certain conditions are satisfied. Roth IRAs are taxed differently than regular IRAs, as they’re funded with after-tax dollars and the contributions are not tax-deductible.

Brokerage accounts don’t have the same tax benefits, but offer greater flexibility in terms of when you can take money out without penalty. Unlike retirement investments like 401(k)s and Roth IRAs, there’s no ceiling on how much you can invest in a brokerage account.

Many investors choose to use a combination of the two, with brokerage accounts used for money you want to invest after maximizing retirement contributions. This is different for everyone and will vary, so definitely do your own research and/or consult a financial advisor to determine what’s right for your specific situation.

5. How much money do I need to start investing?

One of the roadblocks to investing is that sometimes, single shares of stock can cost thousands of dollars. If you aren’t in the market to do that, some platforms, like Public.com, are making investing more accessible by removing account minimums and offering fractional shares. This means that you no longer need thousands of dollars and full shares to invest and participate in the market.

Even if you’re starting with an investment that’s $20 and a small portfolio of stock slices, it will give you hands-on experience as a beginner, without needing to stretch your comfort level before you’re ready.

6. Is there a bad time to start investing? The stock market is at an all-time high, should I wait?

Long-term investing is about finding investments you believe in over the long term. Rather than thinking about how you’re going to be making money immediately, you think about what you’ll make in one, five, or even 20 years. If you’ve heard the phrase, “Time in the market, not timing the market,” it means that a long-term investor is focused on the horizon and is less concerned with short-term movements in the market or within a specific stock price.

A good way to visualize this is to look at a view of the Dow Jones Industrial Average over time. Toggle the chart between shorter windows of time (one day, one week) versus longer periods and you will see how the line squiggles up and down, but over time it has gone up.

The U.S. stock market has produced returns of about 9-10 percent annually to investors. This doesn’t mean that every individual stock sees these numbers, but it does mean that the market as a whole has continued on an upward trajectory over time. Past performance does not guarantee future results in the market, and all investments come with risk, but long-term investors will look to these trends rather than day-to-day.

7. What are some tips or strategies for beginners?

Everyone has a different financial situation, so everyone’s goals and risk tolerance will be different too. Before you invest, consider all aspects of your finances and how investing will impact you, not someone else on the internet who’s giving you advice. No two investors are the same in these regards, so Googling, “What stock should I buy?” isn’t a great place to start. Start with what makes the most sense for you.

Another thing to keep in mind as a beginner is to understand the differences in investment styles. Day traders are short-term investors who make frequent moves in the market. These trades come with greater risk because they require technical analyses and the right timing. For that reason, many day traders are unsuccessful and actually lose money.

Long-term investors are focused on investing in companies or funds that they believe in over a year or more. They do not fret as much about ups and downs during shorter periods, because they are focused on a longer-term target.

Knowing these differences is vital to deciding what investing strategy you want to use as a beginner, and so you understand when you should begin seeing your money grow as a result of your investments.

8. How should I think about evaluating different investment opportunities? What are some things to look for?

Investors look to several signals when determining if they want to make an investment. For stocks, this includes the financial health of the business (these are shared in quarterly earnings reports); the company’s growth prospects (for example, Peloton in the middle of a pandemic when gyms are closed); and even its values. Many investors want to put their money in companies they feel good about, and may choose to factor in things like sustainability, diversity, and other things as they make a decision.

Every investor will weigh their decisions differently. Experts will advise you to do your homework when making a decision.

One thing to consider is that exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, make it possible to invest in collections of stocks based on a theme or trend, meaning you don’t need to pick one “winner.” For example, there are ETFs for the major indexes, green energy, eSports, gender diversity, real estate, healthcare—the list goes on.

9. What does diversification mean exactly?

Simply put: diversification means allocating your money across different types of investments to reduce risk. Say for example you have $100 to invest and you put all of it in a single company, or into companies that are all in the same sector. An isolated event affecting that business or sector could put your entire portfolio at risk.

Now, say for example you split that $100 across 10 investments. These reflect a combination of stocks or funds across different sectors. If a single event impacts a business or sector, only 10 percent of your portfolio would be impacted, versus 100 percent. Investors diversify to spread, and therefore, reduce, risk.

10. What are capital gains?

Capital gains are profits you make through investments. Say you bought one share of stock for $100, and in six months that stock is worth $120. You sell the share for $120, which means your profit is $20. Since you sold the stock and realized the profit, you would owe taxes on that $20. This is an example of short-term capital gains tax, and the taxes you pay would be the same as you would on other income based on your tax bracket.

Now, say you bought that same stock for $100 but sold it 18 months later, and at that point, it’s worth $150. Your profit is $50, but you’d pay a lower tax rate (~15 percent) in this case because you had held the stock for a year or longer. This is long-term capital gains tax and the reason why many investors take a longer-term approach to investing.

One important thing to keep in mind is that you only realize gains (or losses) when you sell. If you buy a share of stock for $100, and a few months later it’s $80, you didn’t “lose” the $20. That stock could recover, so you only lock in losses when you sell.

11. What is a realistic growth time frame when investing money?

Experts will say a good place to start is to write down your financial goals, and to be more specific than “build wealth.” For example, your goals may be:

  • Short-term: Purchase a car in six months
  • Mid-term: Own a home within five years
  • Long-term: Retire by age 65 with $XYZ in savings to live comfortably

Investing is a marathon. Each of these goals will have different strategies for achieving them. In general, the shorter the time frame, the less risk you may want to take on. For example, as many investors get closer to retirement age, their investment choices get more conservative than they may have been a decade before. Keep in mind, there is no one correct answer here and you should do your own research and/or work with a financial expert to come up with the plan that’s best for you.

If you’re at a place in your life that you’re thinking about investing for a home down payment, it’s important to talk with a financial expert about all of the facets that will be a factor for you personally—where you live, how much money you have available, your timeline, etc. This is a situation where everyone is different in several different ways, and having professional guidance is key.

I can’t be alone in feeling like shopping for Father’s Day gifts is one of the hardest gift-giving tasks out there. What do you get a man who already has the best daughter in the world? (Only joking, although I was a pretty great kid if I do say so myself.) Every year I think about what to get my dad for weeks and end up with the same thing: a gift card to a home improvement store. It’s easy, I know he’ll use it, and it saves me from potentially getting him something he won’t like.
